Sometimes as affiliate marketers I think we forget that bigger isn’t always better! Too many times I belive we try to build these huge massive keyword lists when we are first entering a niche and while I appreciate the effort, I think it may hurt us more than help us! In the video below, I discuss my approach to building a keyword list and what it would entail if I was a new affiliate.

I completely agree, I’ve learned the hard way and it is SO much easier to start small and do it right from the start. Launching a huge campaign with a ton of keywords and just a single LP for all those keywords is almost never going to work as well. Great vid.
Well Bryn, the reason I believe a lot of affiliates try this, besides thinking its a good idea (for whatever reason) is because a little while ago (up until about a year ago) you were able to pretty much throw a ton of keywords into Yahoo or MSN, bid really low and make a profit in just about any big niche…not a huge profit, but a nice steady profit. So, naturally this stuff has leaked out onto blogs and stuff and now people read about it and thinks it still applies…however, it does not!
Great Post! I’ve also learned the hard way after launching a campaign with 35K keywords.
I think what amazes me is how some people are able to create 100k keyword lists. I mean, there’s only so many words lol.
Well, with all the keyword tools out there today, I personally don’t find it hard to build a 100k keyword list. Basically just go back and forth between a couple keyword tools and plug the stuff into each other…easy way anyways…
I like the car analogy a lot. makes a lot of sense too and fits in the subject matter well. You need to adjust your audio to be lower though. Killed my ears when I started it in my headphones
I wouldnt be suprised in due time that the PPC engines penalize you for bulk keywords. Its resource intensive for them to accept and serve ads for so many keywords. The 80/20 rule applies to keywords just as well.
what you’re going to do when you bet on few keywords and you don’t get any traffic?
You have a choice of either adding more keyword then or raising your bids on the ones you already have and trying to gain higher spots. I recommend doing the second and tuning your keywords to only be left with the ones converting, however, raising your bids of course increases your chances of spending more money while still losing it.
great post , I just added you to youtube and facebook and subscribed , maybe one day you can write a guest post over on my blog
Your RSS is a fake…you don’t have 444 readers
The picture url is hosted on photobucket.
HAHA Man, why would people do that? And why the hell would you put an ugly RSS box above everything on your site like that and float it entirely to the left (when the site is centered)? Some people amaze me with how dumb they can get.
I’m sure you’re writing the article as we speak Derek… that is so funny.
I learned this after 7 months of blogging. Start choosing less competitive keywords and check on the competitors keyword density. It might help us too.
Thanks for the tips Derek!
Good information about many keywords. It’s really common problem focus on too many keywords.
