Don’t Quit Douchebag!

August 29th, 2009 Derek

don't quitListen, this post is a bit of a rant, but if you’ve ever thought about “taking a break” from affiliate marketing and trying it again later then you need to read this post!

Affiliate Marketing is not easy to get started in, in fact, it’s actually quite difficult for most people.  Of course, there are those rare occasions where someone launched a campaign and see immediate positive results…(like me :D )  However, this is very few and far in between.  Most people start off losing money, that’s just me being honest my friends! :D

However, if you are serious about doing this and making a living by working from home online, then you can’t quit.  If you truly are passionate about affiliate marketing then again, don’t quit!

This business changes rapidly, in fact pretty much any online type business does, but it seems that daily there is something crazy going on in the affiliate marketing space.  You took all the time to learn, read, etc about affiliate marketing and if you “take a break” you are going to throw that all away.

Now I’m not saying if you run out of money to just keep charging away, but don’t stop reading, studying niches, etc.  Why?  Because if you do, you’ll come back later only to realize that you’re basically starting from scratch!  I’m not kidding, that’s how fast things can change in this field.  Of course, you may still remember the basics, but that’s about it.

There are new types of landing pages, new techniques, new search engine requirements, etc that don’t stop changing and evolving while you’re “taking a break” from affiliate marketing and when you come back it will suck having to relearn how to do affiliate marketing…

I’ve seen it time and time again and in fact one of the reasons for this post is because I just had someone that emailed me about a one on one counseling session and they had done just that and I decided to blog about it.  And the crazy thing is, it’s not something new, I’ve heard people tell me this over and over that have come to me for advice or counseling.

The bottom line is, even if you go broke and can’t run a campaign, keep up on what’s going on in affiliate marketing at all times…that is if you even think for a moment that you may try it again when you get some more money!

It is very important to never give up too early, no matter what it is you are doing. Although it wasn’t in affiliate marketing… but I have some friends who took 2+ years to make money with their websites, but they kept at it, and they believed that they were going to hit the payoff with their websites, and they did! They could have taken the easy road and quit, but they kept at it, and were better off as a result. You are right though with you’re suggestion on the money issue.

Till then,

Jean

Not to mention, any break you take sets you back a step in regards to landing that big thing before everyone else does. Big affiliate commissions sometimes means being first to the battle field and if you are back in the office getting coffee, well you just missed out on your share of the bounty.

Good point Chris, breaks can definitely break our momentum, sometimes taking breaks can mean we have to work even harder to catch back up =( I know I’ve experienced this first hand since right now I am a college student.

Till then,

Jean

It is hard to start an online business, it is a headache but only the beggining. I know some freelancers who were desperate, but now they are succesfull, just dont quit!

Very true, it is not an easy thing to get into and get going well. There are a number of times when I feel like giving it a bit of a break and most of the time it is because things are not going so well but then all of a sudden things are on the up and up again. You are very right in saying NEVER GIVE UP!!!

Yep, you can’t quit especially in this industry.

You’ve brought up some really strong and valid points. And they are so true. I have taken a break from affiliate marketing before..and my breaks usually end up being longer than they should be…making it harder and harder to make a comeback. Staying consistent is key.

Great post!

I have also made the mistake of taking extended breaks from affiliate marketing. Luckily I was still somewhat keeping up with the industry at my daytime job. Still by taking a break I definitely lost momentum and the motivation to keep plugging away.

Yes I agree. If you keep consistently working, it is much easier to keep momentum going. Once you take a break, everything gradually starts slipping.

Thanks for the motivation Derek, I think there is a lot of us out there who need it.

Persistence is the key. This can be hard when you need to dedicate your time to something that is going to generate you money now – but it is best to use some longterm vision.
