View Full Version : Grouping keywords...
I group similar keywords in the same adgroup so that I can make targeted ads and a targeted landing page. Would it be at all benificial to simply group similar keywords into the same adgroup but use the same generic ads and landing pages for all the adgroups?
Ugh, but creating 20 new ads for each adgroup is sucha pita...
Ok guys.. I've been doing some grouping with the following tool:
http://clickconsultants.com/toolbox/keysegment/keyword-segmentator.php
But I have a problem with my ringtone campaign and I need some advice. Basically we can't use the word free on ringtone ads (Azoogle) and I have over 4k keywords with the word free which I think may give me some results (quote "I think") .... the problem is that if I create an adgroup with the keywords "free and ringtones" and I don't have those words in my ads for that group, the whole QS is going to be screwed up since the ad is not relevant to the keywords.
ALSO!... what do you think about grouping kwds using trademarks like "verizon', 'alltel', etc?.... I've seen YSM remove some of them but not all.. any thoughts?
Is there a way around this grouping problem?, any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!:)
I forgot to ask.... how many groups is enough per campaign? (once I have grouped the keywords).... I got 36 groups using popular keywords .......AND what about the ads??... should I write 2,3,4,5 ads per group ....
All of this is in reference to keyword grouping........(the newbie technique of dumping all keywords in sets of 2K using 20 generic ads is killing my CTR, WALLET and QS!)
Thanks!

Keywords with free in it is only a problem if you use keyword replacement (or write "free" in your ads).
Personally, I put all my "free" keywords in one adgroup. That way, I know NOT to use keyword replacement for that adgroup, but am free to use keyword replacement in the OTHER adgroups without any worry.
Hope that helps :)

In YSM, it doesn't matter so much as to how many groups you "need".
You get the keywords (the more the better), and you group them.
With 2000 keywords limit per group, you get whatever number that'll fit all your keywords.
AND what about the ads??... should I write 2,3,4,5 ads per group ....

I don't know if you're trying to use the newbie technique or not (grouping isn't part of the newbie technique).
Assuming you're NOT using the newbie technique, then generally speaking, you just need enough ads to cover all the common words for that adgroup. For example, if you have two common words for that adgroup, and you can create one ad with both those words, then you should be able to get away with just 1 ad. Alternatively, if you have three common words, but can only put two per ad, then you should need 3 ads (#1 & #2, #2 & #3, #1 & #3).
Hope that helps!
Great info as always artarmon!, you answered all of my questions but there is still one thing that is bothering me.... and is in reference to the quote below......I understand that KW replacement is a big no no in this case but ...

If you group all the keywords which use the word "free" and THEN you write ads which do not contain the word "free" wouldn't that affect your Quality Score?.....any tips as far as handling this kind of adgroup?
To illustrate my point:
KW list:
Free something
free that
free money
free Al bundy
free la la la
Actual AD:
Complimentary La la

If "free" is the ONLY common keyword in that adgroup, you don't have targeted words. In which case, I'd suggest you delete some of the keywords.
You are completely right, if I have free as the only common word the adgroup is not targeted...
I forgot to add the word ringtones... "free ringtones"..... if those two are the only common words in that particular adgroup........how would you write the actual ad if the word free isn't allowed?.... would you go with just ringtones?....wouldn't the quality score take a hit if you just go with one of the 2 common words?
Sorry to be so stubborn ... but due to my ugly experience (using the newbie technique ... not grouping) I want to make sure I do it right this time around:p
Thanks for helping me out!:D

Well, you can't have "free", so you just need to make sure "ringtones" is in your ad. It's not perfect, but if those are your own two common keywords, that's the best you'll be able to do...
