The reason being is that visitors trust a TLD (top level domain) alot more than another site. I'm not saying it can't work, I just feel that for the price you can get a domain and hosting today, there really isn't a reason to get them. You can get a domain for under 8 bucks and hosting for less than 5 bucks a month. I couldn't show you one because I personally don't have any myself and I don't know of any off the top of my head. Also, a blog normally isn't used for a landing page, normally I use a blog as an addition to my sites to be able to easily add fresh and unique content to the site.
