Well if you’ve never heard of keyCompete then you must be living in a cave. keyCompete is a tool which allows you to basically type in a domain name and steal all of the keywords that domain is bidding on in Google Adwords.
Now while its not 100% accurate its a really good tool…Well its a good tool for the person using it to get all your keywords! Okay so your asking how can I protect myself from someone using keyCompete to get my keywords?
Now the method I’m about to use iisn’t fool proof and sometimes you are still able to get your keywords in keyCompete, but I have found that it helps.
Its quite easy but before I go into the method let me explain one thing…You know how when someone posts in Digitalpoint or Wickedfire about how they found a niche that is making a great return and a crap load of money. Well then you see someone ask them for a domain name and 9/10 times they don’t give it. Its because of programs like keycompete that you shouldn’t give out your keywords.
Anyways, moving on, my method is simple and I have no proof that it works except for the fact that it has seemed to work for me really well.
What I do is lets say you are doing ringtones and your bidding on all the common keywords like free ringtones, download ringtones, get ringtones, etc. Now you also have about 5,000 keywords that you have found in a nice little sub-niche of ringtones that is working really well for you and your wondering well if someone goes to google and types in free ringtones and sees my sites domain and then types in my domain into keycompete they are going to get those great keywords. Well now this is where Common Sense comes into play.
Lets look at how we started that sentance. Someone goes to google and types in free ringtones to find all the ads, they see your domain and type it into keycompete. Now I don’t know about you, but if I had some keywords I wanted to keep seperate the first thing I would do is get a different domain name for those keywords.
Okay, so now you have a different domain name for that sub-niche of ringtones so are people still able to get those keywords? Yes of course they can, but they would need to know your domain name. And the only way they are going to figure that out (unless you tell them) is by going into Google and typing in a keyword that you are using for that sub-niche of ringtones. Now can it happen? Yes of course it can, is it less likely to happen then if you have all your keywords and domains together. Yes of course!!! So split them up and give yourself a little more security for your sub-niche as its probably doing most of your income anyways.
Hope that helps a little, and its been a great way to help stop people from getting my keywords as I would do a niche and find a sub-niche and do really well with it and then in a couple weeks notice all of a sudden a bunch of ads are popping up competeing against me, after I started doing the method above, I might see one or two after a couple months now.
