As most of you know, I’ve been going through a divorce, for those of you that know me a little better, you’ll know that I haven’t been taking it very well. This isn’t about my divorce, however, I will do a post shortly on everything happening as I’ve had a lot of people ask me how it’s going and how I’m doing. This post is however about a very serious problem that can come from going through something huge in your life!
That very serious problem is Absence. Anyone that has been working at building an online business for any period of time will quickly realize that things more extremely quick in this field and industry. Very quick, for example, something that might work really well one month can completely start tanking the next. You must always be searching and looking for the next best thing and the next best way to promote something… Especially in Affiliate Marketing!
This is where the problem comes in…When huge stuff comes up in your life, actually scratch that…..Sometimes even when little things come up in life, we have a tendency to completely shut down as humans when it comes to work. This is especially true if you work for yourself and don’t have a boss breathing down your neck all the time! It’s very easy to let your work slide while going through stuff when you run your own business. The normal response is… I work hard all the time, it won’t hurt anything for me to take a little while off during this problem…
Guess what??? I don’t disagree with that statement at all! In fact, I think that’s one of the great things about owning your own business is that you’re able to take time off when you absolutely need it! However, a week or two off can very very quickly turn into 2 or 3 months off! At least this is what has happened in my case…
Now of course, when this divorce started I never thought I’d need so much time off, in fact, I probably didn’t need all this time off, however, it’s very easy once you stop working to continue to not work!
This is what happened to me and as a result my monthly profits for the last 3 months has been half of what I normally make!!!
So what can you do to help yourself if a problem comes up in your life that is just prohibiting you from doing your work as you should be? I was actually very unprepared for something like this, however, next time I won’t be and I hope these tips will help you if you ever face anything and need to take time off…
Realize You Can’t Stop Working Completely!
Unfortunately, in this business because it moves so fast and things change so much, you can never really ever stop working completely, in fact, if you’ve been in this business for any length of time and have gone on a vacation or something, then you know that even though you aren’t technically working, you’re still keeping up on emails, posts, twitter, etc… Stuff we don’t really consider work, but honestly, it very much is!
So while, you may be able to neglect certain things for a while, if you start to neglect everything you’ll very quickly become extremely behind in your work and your business will suffer because of it! This brings me to my second point…
Realize Not Everything Is Important!
We, internet marketers, love trying new things. In fact, if you’re anything like me you probably launch several new projects a month that while you have good intentions to do huge things with, you never really do too much…However, if you’re still like me, you probably still work on these projects here and there as if you are somehow keeping them alive in-case you ever do change your mind again and want to build it up…
While starting new projects is great, you need to realize that when stuff comes up you’re going to have to rearrange and prioritize your workload. You need to focus on the money makers, put the other stuff on the back burner, and pick them back up later once you get through whatever it is you’re facing! Because if you remember the first point…You can’t ever stop working completely, however, you can reduce how much you are working a lot more than you think if you’ll get rid of some of the fluff projects!!!
Be Prepared for a Hit in Income!
Even though you are still working a bit, and trying to keep things afloat, you must realize that if your problem is a big one, you will probably not making as much a month as your normally do while you are going through it. You need to prepare yourself right from the beginning, make sure you cutting back on spending if you can, start putting some of the extra money into your savings if you can, and just in general get your finances prepared…sometimes things we think will only make us take a week or two off work will make us take 3 months off work!
What Are Your Thoughts?
These are just a few of the things I realized while going through my little time off phase here recently, and again I hope some of these will help you if you face something huge in your life!
Also, I’d love to hear some other tips and pointers from some of you guys that have also gone through some tough situations in life that has caused you to have to take time off from your business!

I agree there are things that matter more than business sometimes
There are things that matter more, however, you still have to realize that your business does matter very much as well and that’s why you need to be prepared. Without an income, things could get a lot worse!
couldn’t agree more.
I’ve been doing aff marketing full time since feb 2003. I’ve hit the 100k a month profit mark a couple times with different stuff and have over a million dollars in adsense gross earnings in that time so it’s not like I’m just starting out.
I took last year off after a really good run with home loans. when it started to tank I took the time off to do something I’ve wanted to do for a really long time.
guess what, the stuff that used to work for me DOES NOT work anymore. I’m now in the process of figuring out what is working and how others are banking as right now I’m not.
Haha, very true Paul! Leaving and coming back can be a killer. I had a friend that did the same exact thing, he was doing about 20k a month, and saved a ton of cash up and then just took a year off…this guy was tearing it up in AM, now he’s come back and he can’t get a single thing working for him…
He’s still trying to do things that worked a year ago…He’s very stubborn
Derek, sorry about the divorce, I know it can be grueling. As far as taking time off, I would say there has to be a balance. Take a day or two off a week, but work regularly right? People get so vested into working on their campaigns for hours and days even on end that they completely block out life, then others go out for a day and come back a month later. There just has to be balance. But I think that comes from liking the work, almost like a hobby. Then again I could be putting too much thought into this, lol.
I’m going thru the same thing, so I feel for you. It’s slow, but everyday you get better than the day before. I’m at about 9 months since my world changed (collapsed). But I’m getting better and so will you. My best tip may seem a bit obvious. Spend more time with your friends and family. The first 3 months, if I didn’t have my family, I would have been a nut case by now.
I hope-I know, everything will get better for you. And don’t get to upset if you give yourself a break. Its what the doctor would have ordered anyway. Take care, Ron
