Ringtones Conversions Soon to Drop 30%

September 7th, 2007 Derek

You heard it right and no its not a title designed to get you here and then to find out something stupid. You may very well see your conversions drop 30% within the next month!

As most of you know that are doing ringtones offers with a CPA network, when a user comes to the offers landing page they have 2 steps they need to go though before you get paid. First they need to enter their mobile phone number, and then they will receive an SMS with a code that they need to confirm on the site that they really want it.

A Third step is currently being added!

Now, details are still a little sketchy as to what exactly the third step will be, however I have had this confirmed from Several Affiliate Managers and also with Several Friends that I know and trust.

However, it has been noted by several that this will be taking place within three to four weeks on a carrier by carrier basis. I couldn’t get any info as to which carriers would be the first to implement this or which ringtone providers, however, every affiliate manager I talked to has stated they are expecting at least a 30% drop in conversions.

Please Note: Some of this stuff is speculations by AM’s or Friends in the Industry, like the rate of conversions dropping and also what exactly the third step will be, however, do know that this is true and going to happen soon, so prepare for it!

UPDATE: The third step is supposedly going to be after the PIN submit, they will then receive a text message saying they will be charged x.xx a month and to reply either yes or no.

I guess the third step is still vague.

But this seems like the vendors are shooting off their own feet. By this, I mean lower conversions to begin with, compounded by lower traffic as affiliates leave in droves.

my $.02 anyways

Well, from what I’ve been told its really the carriers that are pushing the double opt-in because well lets face it when people get their bill and see it who’s the first ones they call? Their phone company. So, we’ll see for sure within the next couple weeks if it will be all carriers, a select few, and exactly what the 3rd step will be.

Derek, you mean triple opt-in? Right now they are already doing double opt-ins ..

Yes you could say that if you consider them putting in their phone number as an opt-in. I wasn’t really considering that as an opt-in. :D But either way you look at it, your users will now be faced with a third step.

Hey Derek, so what do you think about he open indexes on the net that are just packed full of ringtones that you can find with a google hack “indexof” query?

Hope you’re doing ok these days…

Corey

if the 3rd step is going to be the price alert with the need to answer yes I think we should prepare to a higher percentage of drop
