There is only so much space on a web page that returns search results, be it on the side or in the middle. SEO will take longer to reach optimal saturation levels. I dont really look at advantage or disadvantages with PPC and SEO though. I use both, I know to use both. I want all the traffic I can whether I have to pay for it or not. Building quality sites to rank organically though is only going to give you more power in recoccuring visits and more spending in buying additional traffic as well.
