Top Affiliate Challenge – Epic Failure?

July 3rd, 2008 Derek

So, I watched the second episode of Top Affiliate Challenge today and I thought I’d give my opinion on what I think thus far after watching both episodes.

Let’s start at the beginning shall we?  I loaded up the site the day the first episode was released, about 8 hours after it was released, and found what most of you probably experienced… A buffer screen…  After about 10 minutes the show started only to start buffering again after a couple minutes.  I then paused the show and decided to let it fully load before trying to watch it.  I absolutely hate buffer screens!

After 2 hours, yep I said that correct, the episode finally loaded completely.  Also, before you ask, it wasn’t because of my internet!  The site was really that slow!  Again, I know most of you delt with this same problem and know exactly what I’m talking about.

Now, let me talk about the quality of the show.  It is aweful and that’s being polite about it!  I know many of you probably watched Next Internet Millionaire by Joel Comm and while I didn’t think it was the greatest show either, compared to Top Affiliate Challenge it ran circles around it!

Several times during the episode you constantly see the host of the show staring down at her feet, shortly you realize that’s because she is mostly reading from a script that is on the ground.  How can you tell for certain?  Because the frickin’ camera man shows you! LMAO!

The scene to scene transitions are horrid!  There isn’t a smooth transition within the entire show, it’s constantly jagged and uneven.  The text and effects that are used in the show are the same as what you would see from a video production team of high school students from your local school district…Scratch that, middle school students.

They do some of the stupidest things in the show that makes me wonder if they’ve even thought out how each of these things should work…  In episode two, Jason Henderson wins the immunity ring and while the losing team is in the room voting a person off he walks in and says that he has special powers because of the ring and he wants to give it away…The funny thing is, the team has already voted and the person Jason gives the ring to wasn’t even in any danger of being voted off and basically the host tells him what he just did didn’t matter in the least, yet for some reason they still decided to edit it into the episode???  Can you say LAME!

This show promised that it would be better than Next Internet Millionair, that they would actually be showing you how these teams are making money, etc… I’ve yet to see anything remotely helpful in either episodes…and to make things worse, the show is in no way entertaining…

Top Affiliate Challenge is pitiful, boring, mind-numbing, stupid, pathetic, useless, and a downright sad attempt at an internet reality show…  I’m seriously surprised that they haven’t had any of their gurus or contestants walk off the show yet…  Now that would be entertaining!

Thor Shrock…horrible idea!  Thanks for wasting an hour of my life!

This show sucks so bad, I’m not even going to link to the site so if you haven’t seen it and for some reason you really want to, search for it on Google or take a guess at the URL…

bad production, bad host, and all that stuff I could care less… but this part of your post is the killer:

“Next Internet Millionaire, that they would actually be showing you how these teams are making money, etc… I’ve yet to see anything remotely helpful in either episodes”

I have yet to see anything on how they are making money besides one guy changing his personal aff links to his teams aff links, shoemoney ‘cheating’, and ken phoning a friend to help them advertise…

Yeah, I have to totally agree with you. I’ve only watched the first video and was extremely disappointed. Just like you said, everything about the video is LAME!

I am quite new to affiliate marketing and was hoping that the show would actually be able to teach me something, however I highly doubt that I will be able to learn anything of any value whatsoever from the TAC.

It isn’t a question of whether or not it is an epic failure, because IT IS an epic failure.

Thank you for the post and the review. There is absolutely no doubt that we completely underestimated the demand levels on the first episode. We have added two more dual core xeon servers and a frontier load balancer and the show is streaming smoothly now. It really sucked to send the show to Google video, but we had a choice between delivering a less than ideal product or just not delivering.

I shoulder the blame for that miscalculation. As for the production quality, we really should have slotted two days for the first episode production. After that we could go 24 hour delayed. We had to interview all 17 cast members twice the first day, explain the rules and all of the other stuff… A LOT of tape to process in 24 hours.

Although you were clearly disappointed with the first episode, I encourage you to watch a couple more before you make a complete judgment. There is no doubt we are getting better at what we are doing.

NIM had months to produce and we have hours. With that said there is definitely room for improvement and we are doing so every hour.

Hey Thor, I’ll definitely give my review a follow up after a few more episodes have been released and I truly hope you guys turn it around as I feel it will be good in helping new affiliates if it does truly start to information on exactly how to do affiliate marketing.

Also, just to note, my review wasn’t only on the first episode but also the second as I watched them both before posting my review.

Wow, harsh review… but I really can’t argue with it either, though I wish I could. I’m still personally optimistic that the educational component is coming. That is after all the biggest reason why I signed onto this insanity! ;)

Seriously, give it a chance and let’s see what happens. I’ve never been involved in a “reality” show before, and have never even watched one… so to me this entire experience is REALLY bizarre and surreal. But I came to play and I play to win so… we’ll see what happens from here!

just fyi. shoe took us through a complete run down on the whiteboard at his office on how we were going to kick ass, and all of it was on camera. several times insisted the camera come over and film actual strategies as well.

Yeah, I remember them showing Shoe talking about incentive offers for a minute but they didn’t even say that he was talking about incentive offers…

He was just like we can offer gift cards if people complete offers… Hopefully no buddy goes out and offers gift cards now on regular offers!

It would of been nice for them to show more information on what incentive offers are and how their used, etc. I believe that would of helped a lot of new people…

Well, I’m still hopeful that Thor takes all the reviews out there and changes things in some of the upcoming episodes and provides more education…

The show is more linkbait for the people involved.
I read blogs like this one and have learned a lot.

Once I saw some of the people involved, I knew it was the same ole
carrot in front of the newbie type tactics.
