Dennis:

IMO you are over thinking and over planning. Join a network or two, not an individual advertiser. Then you can access hundreds of advertisers.

Hey Derek,

I'm glad you made a post about a question I asked you in your last Q&A video since you have so much more experience than I do. I'm glad you are confirming what I originally thought.

Here are a couple more things off the top of my head:

* Becoming proficient with spreadsheets, knowing your metrics to the tee, RELENTLESS tracking and testing of offers, ads, landing pages, angles.

* Understanding the fundamentals of direct response marketing, understanding the mindset of the target market well + the key movers and shakers in that particular industry (competitors and products).

* A paradigm shift in thinking to overcome fear of failure. This results in taking massive action. And understanding that every test result is a good result, no matter the outcome.

* Self-Management. Which is time-management in a nutshell. What you do with your time, is self-management. Meaning, how you motivate yourself, how you allocate your time to doing what.

There's a lot more but these have been pivotal for me.

I hope this helps some of the newer affiliates here.

Derek and all,
I like your comments on the traits of successful affiliate marketers. Do you agree that experience in marketing advertising and communications can increase probability for success. I have successfully introduced 100s of products in the brick and mortar world and am now attempting affiliate marketing. Frankly, I am having trouble getting started.
Picking a good niche is the biggest, followed by choosing the type of website I should build that will attract advertisers to accept my applications.

I have been told over and over again to pick a niche that interests you and that you have experience in. I am the type of person that gets interested in many things. I like technology and electronics in particular and am very interested in computers, gadgets etc. Is this space too crowded?

What kind of website would you recommend and how would I go about getting the development started? I can easily update HTML and make changes, but setting up the look and feel is something I want to contract out. The people I know in web development are designers. I would love to find a designer that understood affiliate marketing so that my structure could be set up properly.

I know this is a mouth full, but I am anxious to get some help.

Any suggestions?
