So lately, I’ve been messing around with a few of the major social networking sites trying to figure out which ones would be best worth investing my time in to. The bottom line is there are just way too many social networking sites out there and unfortunately with my limited amount of time, I’m finding it very time consuming to try and be active on multiple ones.
So far, here’s what I’m thinking, and the purpose of this post is to hopefully get your guys opinions on which ones you are using, as if most of you aren’t using certain ones, there isn’t much of a reason for me to use them!
There are two different reasons to use social media sites. The first one would be to share information about yourself, sites like myspace and facebook allow you to do this by putting in all of your information, what school(s) you’ve attended, your job, etc. Basically services like these two allow you to share information that you’re willing to share.
The second reason I see using a social networking site would be to actually…urrrr…well…network! Now I believe I have this one covered. I believe that currently the most effective one for doing that would be twitter. It’s simple, easy to use, catching on very quickly, and growing tremendously! It allows you to chat with others, send out blog updates, and more all very quickly from multiple update sources like text messaging, iPhone applications, or directly from twitter’s website.
The major problem I’m having I guess is which other social media site to use, I’m not a huge fan of friendfeed because I don’t have a ton of social sites I need to turn into one feed which from what I understand is pretty much what friendfeed does. Myspace reminds me too much of little kids and tweens and it’s spamtastic!
Facebook, would seem like the best choice, however, the only problem I really have with facebook is that it seems like you’re constantly doing status updates which is what you’re doing on twitter, so why do it on facebook as well?
Then I thought I could just have facebook have all my information and use it for photos, but honestly…I don’t really take photos too much business wise, and I have gallery2 installed on this blog for the little amount of pics I do take. So that leaves just information……
So is that what most of you are doing? Simply putting in your information into facebook and then just using it as a place for people to find out about you? Then instead of using their status update features or whatever, are you simply using a service like twitter?
Anyways, I’d love to know which services you guys are using and how your using them! Thanks in advance!

I’m signed up with most of them. For my blog I use digg, Twitter, reddit as I believe it dives good traffic to it.
For personal I use Facebook, Twitter, Flickr. I stick with the big boys as that’s where most others tend to focus.
Dude, Just integrate facebook with twitter. http://apps.facebook.com/twitter/
Actually I have all my twitter updates post to facebook, but to be honest, from my experiences, it tends to actually confuse most people as they don’t see the entire stuff coming from twitter sometimes, thus they get confused and are like umm what are you talking about lol.
I use a few of the social networks for different purposes.
Facebook is for connecting with friends, old schoolmates and family. I keep that purely social even as far as not adding a marketing contact if they find me on there.
Twitter I use for affiliate marketing contacts.
And Linked In has a lot of networking contacts from my old career in the IT industry. I can see Linked In getting more and more people in the SEM space as well.
That covers all the facets of my life so I tend to ignore any invites to other networks that I am not on.
Yeah, this is kinda how I feel now, I pretty much just ignore most of the invites I get, but sometimes I start to wonder if I’m missing out on the next big thing. One thing about internet marketing and business, is that you can do a whole lot better if you’re on the front end of something versus being on the tail end…
I think you’ll have to use Facebook. It’s the largest and you might as well sign up for it rather than have to juggle several smaller social networks.
Unless your signing up to checkout the advertising platforms, then you should check them all out and see which types of offers would go well with the userbase.
Well, actually I do use both myspace and facebook’s advertising systems, but like most of you are saying, for the actual social media part, I’m thinking facebook and twitter will work just fine. Guess I need to start putting all my effort into those two then.
Great question!! My bad, but I have not yet made the leap into anything really, unless you consider blogging, social networking. I am looking to start though with ONE of the services and would be curious to learn what people thought would be the best to start out with. Thanks!
Well, I’m very much against using at least ONE social networking site. If you really want to succeed in business, in my opinion, one of the best things you can do is create a build a personal brand around your name.
Actually, I have all but given up on facebook. I tend to use linkedin more than any other!
I tweet about once or twice a week.
I used few of social networking site like Digg, Delicious, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Orkut.
The main thing I use is facebook, I have a couple of facebook groups which I use to promote my one fan website, Theres over 1,000+ members in that group so I am able to message all of them and try to get them to join the website, which is really awesome, and I just love facebook. I have a myspace page too… but I rarely use it anymore to promote.
Till then,
Jean
